It should be save because gcc.a in the gpc distribution is (or: should be) the same as gcc.a in the gcc-2.7.2.1 distribution. I recommend you to try to run gpc with gcc.a from your gcc/g77 setup first. (I do not need to mention that you should backup your gcc.a first before replacing it with gpc's one, do I? ;-) Good luck, and let us know about your experience!
