Hello everybody!
I still don't have any of the newer Candi dolls. I am stuck on the Mikelman ones but completely agree with you all that the new Jason Wu ones look great. To everybody who has the new ones or plans to buy, keep the reviews coming, I love to hear them. I know that I'll eventually break down and buy some. My collecting seems to go in spurts. For a while I was all into buying more Dawns and I finally found the new playline dolls and now I seem to be moving into the bigger fashion dolls, which is completely involuntary. LOL. I have no where to put them! For anyone who thinks they may be even remotely interested in Daisy and Willow you really should check ebay. The prices are SO LOW. I just got Daisy (the one with the neat hair peices, I LOVE hair peices for my dolls) and the Poor Boy fashion both shipped to me for only 46.00. Can't beat that with a stick. And, I am completely in love with my new Twiggy doll! I have been a fan of Twiggy, well for a long time. I have two of the older Mattel doll and just got this new one from Franklin Mint. She comes dressed in a lovely mod suit (very loud) and allthough Franklin Mint isn't selling any clothing yet a few extra outfits have shown up on ebay (I'm hoping to get the one that I bid on now), but that's the best place to go anyhow. Twiggy retails for 110.00 but on ebay I got mine for 80.00 (boy did that Christmas money from the family come in handy). They also have a Lucy doll out that I think is wonderful but I can't afford her just yet. I think finally a company has captured the beauty of Lucy and not just the goofiness.
Randall
I think that most of the dolls Franklin Mint have put out captures the look of the real person & I love this whole series of dolls with wardrobe & case to put them in...too bad I dont' have more space to put these bigger dolls not to mention the money. Pat H.
Randall, describing his doll collecting coming in spurts made me think about the upcoming Toy Fair. Why? Because I think for the past couple of years the doll market has been in a slump--a lot of other Randalls have been spurtless, LOL! But there have been dolls that have managed to keep us all still collecting a little, like the Franklin Mint vinyl portrait dolls.
Are there any of you on the List who might like to hazard any guesses what you think doll makers might be trying to do to get collectors eager to buy, again? Do you think larger dolls are the wave of the future or do you think the larger dolls may be proving to be a hazard to a doll company's bottom line? How do you think 11.5" dolls will have to be marketed to consumers to stay competitive, given the huge selection of this size doll? Pat, I really no nothing about the doll market, but I do know the larger 16" dolls are really catching on. I think it's not because of their size but because of the quality of the fashions, the details, the accessories & props. I think if Mattel wants to compete with these dolls, they should give us less variety, but better quality fabrics, more detailed designs, etc. I think they are on the right track with the silkstones. I really don't want to collect the 16" dolls, but I am really tempted because the styles and quality of the fashions are just breathtaking. Mattel needs to quit throwing poor quality stuff at us. For instance the new Marilyn Monroe doll. Her face is really awful and the dress was a big let down. They could of done much better. I know that there are a great deal of collectors who were going to buy this doll and decided against it when they saw her. I hope they have new surprises for us at Toy Fair in the Barbie line, because what I have seen so far is less than inspiring. The designs were not imaginative or intriguing. Mattel doesn't know when to quit, how many Rapunzel dolls or Swan Lake's do we need. I say to Mattel - dazzle us and give us quality! Well, that's my two cents worth, LOL.

LOL! This just busted me up--I don't know if I really see that many of these types of dolls on the Barbie shelves, but there is a kind of monotony, to be sure. I'd personally like to see more ethnicity & more authentic ethnicity in the 11 1/2" dolls. Not so much repeat stuff like Rapunzel & Doctor Barbie, etc. And not so much really "flash" stuff with beading, etc. Too expensive! And that new Marilyn doll is TERRIBLE... Try some new things like the Addams Family & Munsters were. Enough Gone With the Winds & Wizard of Oz, etc... Melissa

Melissa I gotta agree..I'm sick of seeing the Wizard of Oz's etc in the stores here. I'd love to see more authentic looking nationalities too. I have Amazing Nails Lea on the way - she looks very lovely. I am very picky with the vinyl/collectible Barbies these days. Not much captures my attention these days. Another I have on pre-order is the Princess of Egypt. Love that Egyptian theme.
I don't know if I've mentioned yet but I got my Holiday Toast Danish and Winter Mist fashion from Suzanne the other week. And Suzanne again, thanks it was great doing business with you and I appreciate the care you've taken in putting the parcel together. I've got the WM fashion on my Int Hispanic and she looks divine. I love my Danish Candi too. Hell I love Candi!! I've also got some pics of Candi's up on my slowly developing homepage but haven't yet taken pics of the new fashion or Candi but that will happen soon. Here is the link if anyone feels like taking a peek:

Also, I put a very brief history of Candi (what little I do know) so if anyone can let me know if I've made any mistakes or should add anything in let me know so I can fix it.

Lunar, your site looks great so far!
I LOVE how the Int. Hispanic looks in that F.A. dress...this is also the closest close-up I have seen of her face: WOW! She is SO GORGEOUS!! Now I must get her for sure!!! The hair-cut you did really suits her, as well--great job!
I also meant to mention a while ago that I also saw your silkstones. You have a lot!! They look beautiful as well and it is great to see them more close-up as well.
Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth

Hi Lunar
Your Candis looks fabulous!
The light blue color suits Int.Hispanic very good and I love the shorter hairstyle. I also thought about cutting the hair of mine, and now I am shure! I'll do it. :-) The dark red of Int.AA's dress matches marvelous to her skin and her lips.
Except the Swedish I get all Int.Candis, and this one I'll order today, :-) then I have all from this line. I love them!!

Hi silvana
Thanks for looking at my pics. And I'm glad you liked them. I'm one of those people who likes to look at the dolls make-up and overall colouring and put on an outfit that would suit those colours. I love that burgundy dress too. I've had it on my Silkstone Lisette and she looks great in it too. A great contrast with her pale skin and platinum blonde hair. And hey if I can manage to do an okay job at cutting a dolls hair you definitely can.

Hi, Lunar! Finally got a chance to look at your webpage. Very nicely done! Just a warning... Yes, the legs can bend to 90 degrees, but don't leave them that way too long as the vinyl has been known to split. Helena Hamilton actually made the original Candi dolls, handbeading most of the gowns. Then, she & Mikelman got together for a while & he made the faces gorgeous. When that fell apart, Ken Bartram painted the faces briefly before a BIG lull. Eventually Integrity took over the license & Jason has been working his magic since... Straighten me out anyone if I missed or misrepresented something. Melissa

Yep, Candis' still got that "look." Be it "The Look of '94" or 2002. Lunar, have you gone to our List moderator's Candi site? You will get all the information about the history of the doll that you could possibly need for your website. To add to what Melissa has said, Candi has been around much longer than since 1994. That was the year that the doll was mass-marketed in an African American and in the outfit collectors refer to as the catsuit, a one-piece black leotard. Until then Candi was designed as very limited artist dolls by Helena Hamilton. Most of the designs were elaborately beaded and sold at doll shows and through Ms. Hamilton.
Through a fortuitous meeting at a Kitty's Collectibles doll show in Ohio, Paul David and MiKelman met Helena and eventually struck up an affiliation. It was also through Paul David that the limited dolls were also distributed. Then Ms. Hamilton, Paul David and his partner, MiKelman collaborated on several projects of dolls on which MiKelman did the screenings, they changed the bent arm to straight, and the Candi doll became more widely-known and collected through this partnership. One of the collections was called Candi Secrets--which I see at your site, it looks like you've got one in a floral teddy. By 1999 the affiliation was acrimoniously terminated. In the meantime, Ken Bartram was asked to provide product samples of facial screenings but I'm not aware there were any dolls produced with his designs. Other financial and creative issues prevailed for Ms. Hamilton and like Melissa said, there was a "BIG lull." Both Helena and MiKelman have gone on to do other projects which, coincidentally, also brings them to working with Integrity. Ms. Hamilton has and still does own the rights to the Candi name and is licensing the use of the name and the doll concept to Integrity.
There's whole lot more detail to Candi's history, but check out Anja's site. It's very thorough. And if there are any mistakes, Suzanne will surely correct us or we'll all correct each other. I think the larger Fashion dolls are catching on. That might be just because of the newness or because they're different and a change of pace.
I'm pretty much an 11.5 inch Collector because I don't have room for the larger dolls nor the budget. But I'm actually overwhelmed by the choices in the 11.5 dolls. I'm still not caught up on my 2001 collecting goals.
