segmentation fault

I installed binary of gpc on my linux/pentium computer. When I manage to compile a pascal source, I cannot execute the file a.out created, I always got the same answer: segmentation fault! On the other hand, to compile demos programs I must be root? May you help me to solve this trouble Thanks Mike
