Script was really for DJGPP only. Here is patch which adds related support to makefiles. However I moved directory where to put .chr files to src/chr. It's easy to move it back to top directory if needed
I'm not sure if we must support this in the main makefiles. Not until we have free replacement for bgi fonts. The borland license (I checked it because I have a registered one) doesn't allow to link it with a program not compiled with a borland compiler.
