gcp on HP-UX 10.20, alpha-dec-osf3.2

Hi, it's me again. I wrote earlier about problems with gpc making on solaris 2.5 (SunOS 5.5). Which is odd since it referred to the files in 2.6.3, which is the current gcc on the machine. (I don't have root access on this particular machine, so I'm just trying to get by with compiling but not installing 2.7.2.1. I may see if I can find an alpha where I can become root, and then retry. I know that the times.h file is problematic for many packages. also the file /usr/sys/include/sys/mount.h is owned by [161,100] on this system, all others in the directory are [bin,bin] or [root,bin] !! Anyway, I'd really appreciate help on any of these three platforms. At this time it's zero for three attempts and I have no pascal compiler. Thanks, John Miller

According to Brin: > I agree Forget about the p_sin func, but make anlias, ie #define p_sin(x) > sin(x) This doesn't change anything since the GPC-compiled program and the run time library communicate through the linker, and a `#define' alias is invisible for the linker. There is, however, a "linker alias" we could use to define the symbol `_p_sin' as an alias for `sin'. Something like "__asm__ (.foobar "_p_sin", "sin"). Somebody knows? Should we use it? Help building gpc under solaris 2.5!

Dear gcp experts, I am trying to get gpc up so that we can do some benchmarking of a 2400-line pascal program that we have - transportations modelling. More on that later perhaps. The system is a SPARCcenter 2000 running sparc-sun-solaris2.5. I seem to have successfully installed GCC 2.7.2.1. I can compile and run a simple C program with it. My make is GNU Make version 3.74. The results of the ./configure in the gcc-2,0 directory seem to be without error. No refs to this in your mail-archive or FAQ. Via alta-vista, I've found others having this problem with other packages. What did I do wrong, or fail to read between the lines, or just fail to read!? The best approximation to a complete GPC reference is my current draft of such a thing. I am uploading it to ftp://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/home/peter/gpc-doc.tar.gz It is in Texinfo format that can be automatically translated to DVI (for printing), Info, HTML, and other formats. GPC reference

I'm new to GPC, but have done a bit of programming with Pascal over the last 12 years with Turbo Pascal (3.x to 5.5) and VAX-Pascal on VMS. I'd like to find something approximating a complete reference and would greatly appreciate any help in this quest. I'm more interested in reference VS instruction material at this time. I just fixed it. :-) The problem was that methods get an implicit `Var' parameter called `Self', so they need a pointer to the object be defined. Some centuries ago, I told GPC to define `ptr_to_Myobject = ^MyObject' implicitly (with the first casing being as written, i.e. inaccessible for the user program), so this did work in a program. What I had forgotten was to *export* `ptr_to_Myobject' if this was done in a Unit or Module. Diff follows. A new GPC beta will follow soon. (Some things in the run time library have to stabilize first.) For the impatient: I am uploading the current "state of the art" as a sequence of gzipped diffs to ftp://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/gnu-pascal/beta/ (without further comment). Mathematical functions

Hello! The GPC run time library contains a function `_p_sin' which does nothing else than to call the `sin' function from the C library. As a try, I told GPC to forget about `_p_sin' and to call `sin' directly. Here are the results for a test program (compiled with -O3 on Linux): Calling `_p_sin': 9.93user 0.01system 0:10.11elapsed 98%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (72major+14minor)pagefaults 0swaps Calling `sin' directly: 9.11user 0.01system 0:09.12elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (72major+14minor)pagefaults 0swaps This means a gain of speed of about 9%. If there is no special reason for having an extra `_p_sin' I would vote for dropping it in favour of calling `sin' directly, and similar for other mathematical functions. Comments? -g Works

Compiling with '-g' seems to work. I dont usually compile with this option, so I cant be sure. However, the last couple of programs compiled OK with '-g'. Great Work! For gpc-2.2: Drop the `_p_foo()' versions of all mathematical functions but those not supported by the OS (read: by `libc.a') and do the checking inline. Make `--fast-math' turn out the checking.
