newbie building gpc

Hi, I am trying to build gpc with gcc 2.95 for UnixWare and Tru64 UNIX. I have two questions... 1. In the INSTALL instructions is says to apply a patch to gcc but I can't find one for gcc 2.95. Is a patch needed for this version? 2. When I try a "make LANGUAGES=pascal" things crank along for a minute or two and then I get a message indicating that it does not know how to make pascal. Does anyone know what I need to do to get past this? Here are the last few lines generated by the make... gcc -c -DIN_GCC -DHAIFA -g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I./config -I./../include obstack.c gcc -DIN_GCC -DHAIFA -g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -o cccp cccp.o cexp.o intl.o prefix.o version.o mbchar.o obstack.o -lmld ../libiberty/libiberty.a rm -f cpp ln cccp cpp (cd intl && make all) Make: Don't know how to make pascal. can't compile gpc-19990813

Hello, until today I prefered gpc's binary distribution. But there is no recent gpc binary for x86 Linux. So I've tried to compile gpc-19990813 on my machine, using SuSE Linux 6.1 with egcs-2.91.66 on a Intel P90 :-| First of all I've removed all old gpc releated files (I hope so) Followed by: su cd /usr/src tar -xvzf gpc-19990813.tar.gz mv gpc/p egcs-1.1/p cd /usr/src/egcs-1.1 chgrp -R users * chown -R achim * # I've done this to avoid problems with different rigths exit I've now the following structure: egcs source is in /usr/src/egcs-1.1 gcc source is in /usr/src/egcs-1.1/gcc gpc source is in /usr/src/egcs-1.1/gcc/p # now as user "achim": cd /usr/src/egcs-1.1/gcc ./configure make LANGUAGES=pascal 2>x.x cat x.x ------ Makefile:4869: warning: overriding commands for target `check-gpc' Makefile:4865: warning: ignoring old commands for target `check-gpc' make: Circular cplib2.ready <- pascal dependency dropped. cat: ./p/gpc_release: No such file or directory ^^^^^^^^^^^ this file exists! make: *** No rule to make target `prefix.h', needed by `gcj.o'. Stop. ------ So what goes wrong? Please Help! Well, at least the 3rd mechanism is specified in the Extended Pascal standard (ISO 10206), while your way (derving the file name from the variable name) is not standardized and therefore also compiler dependent... Problems with Pascal and gcc-2.95.1

HI Someone, I can't install the Gnu Pascal over the gcc-2.95.1. I tried to patch the diffs files, but I didn't obtain success. *** *** ./configure detected GCC version 2.95.1. *** GPC 2.1 requires one of the following versions of GCC sources to build: *** *** 2.8.1 *** egcs-2.91.57 *** egcs-2.91.60 *** egcs-2.92.27 *** egcs-2.92.33 *** *** (You can try to patch GCC manually by typing a command like *** `patch -p1 < p/diffs/gcc-2.8.1.diff' and patching possible rejects *** by hand before you run `./configure' again.) *** If someone knows how to install in this version of gcc, please send me a emails. thanks in advice, -- Geraldo Kern kern(a)iprj.uerj.br

Still it would make life easier for people like me encountering some problems, 'cause I could skim the archive first (so a searchable archive would be really nice :-). Also I don't know if you send replies to the list only - in that case it would help, since not everybody like me wants to subscribe the list (there are to many already). Well, I read about that alpha version - just wanted to look in and thought I let you know... I read some stuff on the egcs ml as well. Anyhow, it hasn't worked with egcs-1.1.2 (I think that was the one I used) for me as well. I don't have any egcs sources around right now, but I will get back to try it and will send in the problems I get. (IIRC it was just the same, not sure about that, though.) Right now I am using the binaries from the gpc ftp page, they are working nice for me. Next thing I would like to see is a gcc-3.0 including gpc :-) Btw: If this is still of any interest, I could help setting up a cvs repository for gpc. In case it will be incorporated into gcc really soon, there is no need, but otherwise... I have a 486 that is our dedicated cvs server, I could create a repository there, that is a slow but doable solution. Moreover I could set it up somewhere else, if you provide me with a user login and the admin is willing to do some work as well. compiler optimization

Hi Usuing gcc-2.8.1 and i586-pc-linux-gnu, compiled gpc with no optimization, O1, and O2 (except part where O2 would crash) Then used gpc to compile 4 of the demo programs. While there was little difference between the no optimazation and the O2 version, the O1 version produced programs that were significantly smaller: pi 248155 bytes power 253838 bytes schemademo 152992 bytes stringschemademo 153690 bytes just thought you'd like to know thanks, Russ <russwhit(a)mind.net>
