gpc with gcc 3.1.1

I am trying to make gpc work with gpc 3.1.1. Currently gpc1 compiles and links (I omitted gcpp, runtime and the 'gpc' driver). About 80% of testsuite works, but the remaining bugs still make compiler unuseable: -- gcp1 crashes trying to use gpc unit -- sometimes arrays and records are mislayed -- record layout functions complain about function declarations in objects. Of course, a bunch of minor bugs also shows up. I have a few questions about getting my work into mainline: -- is there anybody working on the same thing (the disscusion few months ago suggested that nobody)? -- should I try to resolve remaning bugs before I submit a patch? -- is gpc supposed to compile with other C compilers or only with gcc? Comparision Cardinal/Integer Bug?

I don't know whether it's a feature or a bug, I didn't find it on the list of known bugs so here is my report: Comparisions between Cardinal and Integer may fail, if the Integer value is negative. Cannot display variables with GDB

When debugging GPC 2.1 programs with GDB, I am unable to print the values of variables that are of the "standard" types. Variables of user-defined types appear to print OK. I am using the Chief's "i486-mingw32" port from: http://www.gnu-pascal.de/contrib/chief/win32/mingw32/ ...but I have observed the same problem in a Mingw version that I built myself. Packed records

Is there any definitive info how packed types _should_ work in GPC. Problems compiling GPC on NetBSD/sparc

Hi folks, I've been trying to compile GPC on my NetBSD/sparc 1.5.2 system. Unfortunately it fails with a bunch of 'undefined reference' errors for calls to libc functions. Here are a few snips of the output from make. GPC 2.1 (GCC 2.95.2) optimization.

Hi, What is the status as far as using optimization is concerned? Is it supposed to be usable? If so I have a problem... I'm on a Solaris 2.6 Ultra 1 using GPC 2.1 (based on GCC 2.95.2). Source code showing the problem is below. When I build and run with the commands:- gpc -c opt.pas gpc -c -DMYMODULE opt.pas -o lichkp1.o gpc opt.o lichkp1.o a.out I see "ok" but if I use -O i.e. gpc -c opt.pas gpc -c -DMYMODULE opt.pas -o lichkp1.o -O gpc opt.o lichkp1.o a.out I see "failed". Can anyone help? Newer technology is better for that, also 3.x series looks much cleaner then 2.x. On the other hand big plus for GCC is its wide reach -- it supports many architectures and many languages -- and I would like to have that all in a _single_ version. 2.95.3 today is probably best as production compiler, but I think in a few months 3.x will have fewer bugs. 3.1 have support for new architectures: s390, and better HP support. Also Ada is integrated in 3.1, and java in 3.x is much better then in 2.95.3. Finally, C++ in 3.1 is binary incompatible with 2.95.3 -- so currently that stops wide adoption of 3.x, but then the transition will be very fast. New bug in gpc 2.1 ?

Hi all, It seems that a new bug has crept in in recent versions of gpc (I use 2.1 / djgpp). I found it in recompiling a program which worked correctly some times ago. Some strange behaviour of GPC

Hi! I use packed arrays of booleans and need to look for bit set and clear in them. The arrays are of different sizes, but I cannot use a conformant array. I've written function Find_First_bit_Set (buff_ptr:pointer, bit_size:integer) : integer; and then to pass Addr(bit_array) and BitSizeOf(bit_array). The problem is that for BitSizeOf (packed array of boolean) always returns me 8*SizeOf like in the following case: program tst; var aa : packed array [1..19] of boolean; begin writeln (SizeOf(aa), ' ', BitSizeOf(aa)); end. the output I get is: 4 32. what can be wrong? I use GPC 2.1 compiled on HP-UX B.11.00 Thank you in advance, Nick

bad configuration with mingwin

I just tried, several times, to install gpc under Mingwin. I fail every time in the same way: when I launch gpc, it does not find its own parts. 1) I get a message <<cannot exec /mingw/lib.....>> even though the required exe does exist, precisely where gpc looks for it I have a dirty workaround for this problem: if I do not set GPC_EXEC_PREFIX but put the directory /mingw/lib/gcc-lib/mingw32/2.95.3-6 in the path the executables are found. I then fall on the second problem 2) Units are not found (crt, gpc, etc...) My last attempt was with a fresh Mingwin distribution, specially downloaded form the mingwin site, with just the same version number as the gpc package, so I do not know what to do. There is no problem with the djgpp version (well, almost: the crt unit does not display accented letters !) -- Jean-Pierre Vial

Build Problems

I am trying to build GPC under IRIX. I followed the basic set of instructions from the GPC manual, or wherever it was that I found them, with the exception that I am building all of the compilers instead of just GPC (originally I tried using the specified option to only build GPC, then left it off afterward, and the result is the same). GCC Version: 2.95.3 GPC Version: 20020510 IRIX Version: 6.5.15m Using GNU make (called with the command 'gmake' under IRIX). The problem is this: The build gets to a certain point, then gives me an "internal error" in the compiler. I tried placing empty Pascal files in place of some of the originals, but the error simply changes to occur in a different source file (the original files are now restored). The error is as follows: ../.././xgpc -B../.././ -c <...> <home>/gcc-2.95.3/gcc/p/rts/string.pas <home>/gcc-2.95.3/gcc/p/rts/string.pas: In procedure 'Upcasestring': <home><.....>/string.pas: 177: Internal compiler error in 'modified_type_die', at gcc-2.95.3/gcc/dwarf2out.c:6485 Can someone please help me with this? I really want to get this working, but have not been able to get around this bug. If any further info is needed, let me know. Also, I have some experience programming in a variety of languages, etc., so if you need me to make changes/etc. and try things, I am open to suggestions -- I can at least try. I am familiar with C, thouroughly enjoy Pascal, and am somewhat knowledgeable about UNIX (I have worked with Linux, Solaris, IRIX), so I can handle the OS for the most part as well. Thank you for any help you can provide! Also: I did not see another means of bug reporting, if there is one, let me know so that I can resubmit this in the appropriate way. Welcome to the wonderful world of Zlib zlib 1.1.4 is a general purpose data compression library. All the code is thread safe. The data format used by the zlib library is described by RFCs (Request for Comments) 1950 to 1952 in the files http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1950.txt (zlib format), rfc1951.txt (deflate format) and rfc1952.txt (gzip format). These documents are also available in other formats from ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/png/documents/zlib/zdoc-index.html This unit is based on zlib 1.1.4 Differences to zlib.h: ====================== - No underscores - ZLIB_VERSION is renamed to ZLibVersionConst - function ZlibVersion returns String - function GzEof returns boolean value - GzError returns String - SEEK_SET and SEEK_CUR are introduced in this unit as SeekSet and SeekCur. Not sure why you are doing things this way, anyhow ... Why not eliminate the non-standard "BitSize" function?, thus : program tst; const BitArraySize = 19; var aa : packed array [1..BitArraySize] of boolean; begin ...... Also, why are you using a pointer to your array, why not simply pass it to your "Find_First_bit_Set" function as a parameter (var parameter, if you wish)? General GNU Pascal questions

Hi I am new to GNU Pascal so please forgive my basic questions. Does the compiler under Windows work in a text mode or GUI mode? Can you write GUI programs with this? Does it support ODBC or OLE DB or any particular database? Does the compiler have an IDE? Can it use DLL's or ActiveX controls? I don't understand how to download and install the Windows version. Can you help me please? Must you first install the DOS version? Thank you Heine Ferreira

Hi all. Will sizeof(somestring) always be 9 bytes larger than high(somestring)/getstringcapacity(somestring)? Or is it just in one case I have found this...
