Getting started ...

Hi This is always the most difficult part! I am porting a very old Pascal program written originally in Prospero Pro-Pascal and I want to use a (relatively) platform independent compiler. Hence gpc. So a few questions - I have already searched in the info pages (aka the 400+ page manual) and found the answers to some of my questions but: 1 A simple program like: program t(Input,Output); var s:string[20]; begin read(s); writeln(s); end. when compiled (and it works) still gives a message: /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.2/libgpc.a(randfile.o): In function `do_seek': /home/elug/pascal-wochenende-20000729/gcc-2.95.2/gcc/p/rts/randfile.c:327: the `llseek' function may be dangerous; use `lseek64' instead. I may be running this at the weekend (RH 6.2 but gpc --version gives 2.95.2 19991024 (release) rather than anything like 20000729) but is this possibly an installation problem? 2 Is there a way of taking the command line arguments into a program? eg for a program foo.pas that compiles to a.out, I want to access argument 1 as 'something' in: ./a.out something Is the whole command line available (like $0)? I saw the demo getopt but when I tried to compile this, I was told that it couldn't find GPC (from uses GPC). Does this mean that I haven't installed it properly? gpc is in the default place (/usr/local/bin/gpc etc) Hope my questions are clear TIA John

GLib-Unit

Hi! The GLib-Unit for Gnu-Pascal is available at ftp://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/~lange/ This unit provides: - singly and doubly linked lists, - hash-tables, - caches, - date/time - functions and much more. This unit is also basically needed to port gdk which is needed to port gtk :-) IMHO this unit is very useful for programmers, even without interest on the development of graphical user interfaces. file descriptor problem

We currently face a problem porting pascal Oregon programs on GPC. These programs use files descriptors declared as global variables. These descriptors are declared in a module while they are used in another module. Trying to open one of these files in write mode (rewrite function), we get a strange error message: ?GPC runtime error: (gpc-rts) _p_initfdr() has not been called for file (#701) Does someone know how to manage file descriptors declared as global variables? Internal compiler error

I received the following error: gpc -Wall --executable-file-name --automake --unit-path=/home/wstomv/projects/yahtzee/units --unit-destination-path=/home/wstomv/projects/yahtzee/units testdriver.p testdriver.p: In function `Testgamestatistics': testdriver.p:39: Internal compiler error in `contains_file_p', at util.c:1542 Please submit a full bug report. See <URL:http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/faq.html#bugreport> for instructions. make: *** [testdriver] Error 1 The URL refers to a page that has moved and is for gcc, not gpc. What is the thing to do? The program that causes this is not so small (thousands of lines), and I don't feel like locating the error unless it is really helpful. By the way, I use gpc version 20001122, based on 2.95.2 19991024 (release) Greetings, Tom

It may have been the case that I had an outdated .gpi file. After removing it, and compiling again the internal compiler error disappeared. I am still confused that the compiler refers to Testgamestatistics as a function, because it actually is a procedure. On the line where it complains, there is a call of a procedure in the unit whose .gpi file may have been outdated. Thanks, Tom

A very minor documentation error

Dear Sirs, Mesdames, Unspecified Neuters, and others: The heading to the page http://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/~gnu-pascal/gpc_4.html#SEC4 3.1 General Changes And Possible Incompatibilies To Previous Versions and the link to it on the page http://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/~gnu-pascal/news.html (there may be other links - I haven't searched) is not in English (not even International English). It should read "Incompatibilies To" <- "Incompatibilities With" Normally, the preposition "With", articles and conjunctions shouldn't be capitalised either, except at the start of a sentence. The site is notably inconsistent in its capitalisation style, so I feel free to suggest a merely local change. I propose a squeakily-clean replacement with 3.1 General Changes and Possible Incompatibilities with Previous Versions You could also port the documentation to early modern English printing style and write 3.1 General Changes And possible Incompatibilities with previous Versions, but I won't undertake this task myself. Hello, found of Pascal language, I try to port gpc en Mac OS X, my favorite system. I download gpc 2.0 version that meets my cc version : [localhost:gpc-2.0/test/misc] pascal% cc -v Reading specs from /usr/libexec/ppc/2.8.1-egcs/specs Apple Computer, Inc. version cc-2, based on gcc driver version 2.7.2.1 executing gcc version 2.8.1-egcs After several minor modifications, I produce a binary set for Mac OS X. It works quite well, but have some troubles with test set : [localhost:gpc-2.0/test/misc] pascal% gpc -o txtfile txtfile.pas ld: /var/tmp/cc0033521.o has external relocation entries in non-writable section (__TEXT,__text) for symbols: _memcpy [localhost:gpc-2.0/test/misc] pascal% gpc -v gpc version 2.0(2.7.2.1) [localhost:gpc-2.0/test/misc] pascal% uname -a Darwin localhost 1.2 Darwin Kernel Version 1.2: Wed Aug 30 23:32:53 PDT 2000; root:xnu/xnu-103.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc Is there an explanation for that ? Help getting compiler to compile

Greetings all, I have installed the latest beta binary (gpc-19990118-egcs-1.1.1-i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1) on my Redhat system. gcc --version reports egcs-2.91.66 Any source, including the demos, that I try to compile produces the following error message: /tmp/<filename>.i:1: numeric constant with no digits /tmp/<filename>.i:1: numeric constant with no digits /tmp/<filename>.i:1: invalid #line /tmp/<filename>.i:1: warning: missing program header /tmp/<filename>.i:1: parse error at null character I've gone through the documentation and have not been able to resolve this problem.
