Try the "--autobuild" option, ie. "gpc --autobuild payroll.pas".
If that doesn't work, you might not have installed correctly, particularly depending on the use or non-use of "long file names". For more information, I suggest you might read : http://jds-freeware.hypermart.net/pascal/how2gpc.dos.txt
