Frank, you seem to be arguing that we should patch the driver, but that patching the driver isn't a good idea! ;-)
You got me there. However, this patch is quite minor and (I hope) shouldn't break anthing because there are regularly no CRs in specs. While messing witht he environment variables would significantly change the behaviour in the driver (in an area that was apparently also well considered by the GCC people).
Besides, I *did* suggest to submit this patch to the GCC people. I jsut don't see why I should do that since the patch is not really for my own use.
Regardless, I don't believe it matters whether we patch the driver or make sure that "specs" is generated without CRs.
As far as I understood the Chief that's quite hard if not impossible to make sure in all situations.
