When I try to run Makefile I get a error Permission denied
How do you mean "run Makefile"? Just issue "make" and all the tutorial programs will be built, plus the xpm2pas utility. If you issue "make install" then it will look for a default units directory, though I suggest that you install them elsewhere and use --unit-path to find them.
I have assumed that this is the path to get a GUI without programming all the buttons ect. by myself also the shortest path to make nice programs that runs under X?
