gcc 2.7.2.1 to compile the cross compiler and gpc. Do you mean to imply I
need to use a gcc-2.8.1 native compiler to compile the gpc source?
No.  gcc-2.7.2.1 should work fine.  The *source* must be 2.8.x or EGCS.
