Hello all,
Ken is kind to describe my efforts as successful. Initially, I set out to test the idea that an old libc was to blame, but I soon realized that tinkering with gcc is not trivial and that it was very easy to break things.
With regards to the bug mentioned, this is fixed by a patch that Peter posted to the list in November. In my experience, however, the patch exposed other apparent bugs having to do with parameter passing that I was not able to investigate fully. Like Ken, I've had other things come up and haven't been able to get back to 971001.
My advice, which is influenced very heavily by the small amount of time I can spend writing Pascal programs and might not be useful for someone with more time and an inclination to get deeply involved with gpc, is to resist the urge to tinker with the alpha releases and wait for a beta release. On the other hand, it would be interesting to know why 971001 gave so many of us problems.
Tom

I remember hearing it proposed somewhere that this problem might be a result of an old libc, but I haven't heard this confirmed by anybody. I think this was proposed in the gpc 1997 mailing list archive, but I never heard if it was resolved, and I don't subscribe to the list...
The conditions under which the error occured had been there, but I did not get the confirmation that recompiling GPC really solved the problem. Ken, if you are reading this, did it?
Hi All,
Well, I was able to make it work once, quite a while ago (November I think) by recompiling. Having an older libc was not the direct problem. Since then, as life insists, priorities change. I have not been able to do much with the newer releases due to time constraints. HOWEVER, Tom Dye was much more successful than I with the more recent ones. If you are there Tom, have you had success compiling the more recent GPCs and using them?
