You are right about the fact that it would have flagged/ rejected these emails also. IMHO it's worth it.

Let me suggest an alternative: adding something to the subject line which would identify the email as from the gpc list. We subscribers would know that the unsubscribe request is for the gpc list for example since the subject would be: *gpc* unsubscribe (or something similar).
