But the most recent version that we got to work here is an alpha version date 19980901 together with egcs-1.1. The newer alpha versions fail to compile. I mailed this to the gpc-list November 3 1999, but regrettably the archive does not contain messages after Oktober 1999. But anyway the gas problem (and solution) is described in the gcc documentation. The ad hoc solution that I have been using several years is the following. First: you need gas. Before making gcc/gpc: put a symbolic link such as "ln -s /usr/local/bin/gas as" in the gcc-build directory. The make process will use this "as". After installing: e.g. in /opt/gcc, add the same symbolic link in the directory where the main compiler code resides, e.g. in /opt/egcs/lib/gcc-lib/hppa1.1-hp-hpux10.20/egcs-2.91.57/ (in our case) The gcc/gpc version will use this "as". This kludge has always worked for me. But again current gpc will fail to compile:(. Sietse

Perhaps you might want to ask the GCC list <gcc(a)gcc.gnu.org> how they get GCC running on HP/UX. They might also have the required binaries (except GPC). I've never used HP/UX so I don't know exactly what you need. Is there someone on this list using HP/UX? Thanks Frank, I used to use Solaris and seldom worked on HP myself. I did get gcc binary package from HP's web site. Although I was surprised to learn gnu ld won't compile on HP. Doing web search find me nothing on gpc associated with HP. I would appreciated if anyone has links to gpc / gnu-ld on HP. It seemed to me that I still have lot of things to learn especially on HP. Compiling GCC on HP-UX 10.20

I started this thread last week when I reported the following errors (see below) when compiling gcc-2.52.2-gpc-19991030 on HP-UX 10.20. There had been a series of discussions on how to compile GCC (without GPC) on HP. I try to summarize the issues here. 1. you need GBU binutils to get the assemler (as); HPÂ’s as seemed not working well in building GCC 2. GNU linker (ld), which is a part from GNU binutuils, could not be built. A poster (in comp.sys.hp.hpux) commented on building GNU ld on HP below. Â“You can't -- it's not supported. Reason: HP's odd binary format.Â” 3. Now even if you have GNU Â“asÂ” and HPÂ’s Â“asÂ” on your HP box, and you have GNU Â“asÂ” before HP Â“asÂ” in your $PATH, GCC compilation cannot be guaranteed to use GNU Â“asÂ”. One trick a poster (in gpc.gnu.de) had suggested is to soft-link GNU Â“asÂ” to GCCÂ’s build directory. This same trick was also suggested by another poster in in comp.sys.hp.hpux. 4. HPÂ’s sed was buggy in that it put time stamps onto some files, making the build to complain. The resolution was two fold : get a patch from HP to patch HPÂ’s sed, or get GNU sed. 5. GNU autoconf may be necessary; although I did hack a Makefile to get rid of the Â“autoheader not foundÂ” error without having GNU autoconf installed. But lately I just install GNU autoconf to get rid of the trouble. 6. A script suggested by a poster (in comp.sys.hp.hpux) help in the building of GCC-2.95.2. I modified it a bit to add comment and add log-files. See the scripted attached at the end of this message. I have succeeded in build GCC-2.95.2 (without GPC) using this script (and the pre-requsites : autoconf, gnu sed, gnu as). Yet I got the same errors (attached at the end) using the same script for GCC-2.95.2-plus-GPC-19991030. So, it seemed to be a GPC bug when comparing the two builds (GCC built OK; GCC-GPC built failed). I hope someone could reproduce the problem on their HP-UX, just to rule out error due to my inexperience on HP-UX. Thanks a lot for your attention. Compiler error

Hello all. I am getting a strange compiler error and I don't know why. Maybe one of you can help. In one global file I have: DevMdType = ( DevShared, DevExclusive ); In another file I have this: PROCEDURE LPOpen ( LPDevMode : DevMdType; VAR LPStatus : SHORTINT ); Still later, I try to call LPOpen: LPOpen (DevShared, PrnStatus); And I get "incompatible type for argument 1 of `Lpopen'" Shouldn't this work? pointers, arrays

Thanks for the help with dynamic allocation of arrays. Can any body help me with these two questions: 1) Is it possible to use a notation like the this in C: item->next_item->data->name = 'test name' and if it is, how is it done? 2) To get data out of an array by the help of pointers type arraytype = array[1..100, 1..100] of interger; var a: arraytype; k : ect.. .. max :=0; for k := 51 to 100 begin if A[50,k]>max then max := A[50,k]; end; or for k := 51 to 100 begin if A[k,50]>max then max := A[k,50]; end; I am thinke of something like this not very nice example: finish_ptr := addrs(A[50,100]) a_ptr := addrs(A[50,51]) max_ptr := a_ptr; incrementing value/function ? while a_ptr <> finish_ptr do begin (a_ptr := a_ptr + incrementionvalue) / (incremention function (a_prt)); if a_ptr > max_ptr then max_ptr := a_ptr; end; If it is possible how do I calculate the incrementation value(x) for both A[50, 51+x] and A[51+x,50] or make a function/procedure? 3) Is there a good place or textbook to find information about working with pointers in pascal and datastructures? I will be gratefull for any help, klaus

I got gnu as; and it choked on gnu as with something like Â“as : /var/tmp/xyz.s Â…. Something unknownÂ” on some *.c files. Well, I couldnÂ’t get gnu ld; binutils-2.9.1 package (from HPÂ’s site) had Â“ldÂ” missing. I fetched the source of binutils-2.9.1 and tried to build it myself with no luck. The configure script complained that Â“this configuration Â…. had problem building ldÂ”.
