Hi Text version of old faq was released without copyright notice. Think it was because texi wants 2 copies of copyright - one for texinfo and the other for TeX. So my question is - how should the copyright notice read for the new faq? Russ <russwhit(a)mind.net>

I have this routine that will extract the processor time on a Linux based PC. It's written in C but I'm sure it could be converted, or at least linked in. extern __inline__ unsigned long long int rdtsc() { unsigned long long int x; __asm__ volatile (".byte 0x0f, 0x31" : "=A" (x)); return x; } This routine will return the number of processor cycles since system boot, an in order to make any sense of it you need to know your system CPU clock speed. We subscribers would know that the unsubscribe request is for the gpc list for example since the subject would be: *gpc* unsubscribe (or something similar). Regards, Clyde

No problem (it's nothing to do with Pascal in general, anyway -- as Peter noted, the only predefined routines to deal with time in Pascal are GetTimeStamp etc., but they measure real time, not CPU time). As I said in my last mail, if you have a not too old GPC release, you can use GetCPUTime. (In contrast to VAX Pascal, the result is not "most likely" in 10ms intervals, but definitely in seconds and microseconds. :-) So, if you want a "most likely";-) VAX Pascal compatible `Clock' routine, you can use the following code. (I use `LongInt' for the return value just in case -- `Integer' would be good for 2^31/100/86400 ~ 249 days.) The demo program shows that really CPU time is measured, i.e., `Sleep' doesn't take up time, but the loop does. program Foo; uses GPC; { Compatible to VAX Pascal. I see what the problem is: I'm using GNU Pascal as opposed to DEC VAX Pascal (where clock is a global function defined below). Does anyone know a way to mimic this "clock" in GNU Pascal? (I apologize for my lack of Pascal knowledge!) e.g. y := clock/1000-y1 Source:http://www.openvms.digital.com/wizard/group3/335.HTML Ask the Wizard Questions PASCAL Language: PASCAL CLOCK The Question is: What is the granularity of the CLOCK command in VAX PASCAL, also, what units does it measure? The Answer is: According to the DEC Pascal Language Reference Manual: " 8.21 CLOCK Function The CLOCK function returns an integer value indicating the amount of central processor time (in milliseconds) used by the current process. This function does not have a parame- ter list. The result of CLOCK includes the amount of central processor time allocated to all previously executed images." That being the case, the value is most likely taken from the system clock which is incremented at 10ms intervals - hence the granularity will be 10ms. A simple program seems to support this: PROGRAM CheckClock(OUTPUT); VAR LastTime,NextTime : INTEGER; BEGIN LastTime:=CLOCK; REPEAT NextTime:=CLOCK; UNTIL LastTime <> NextTime; WriteLn('LastTime = ',LastTime,' NextTime = ',NextTime); END. $ run checkclock LastTime = 3495890 NextTime = 3495900 Note however that the granularity may vary in future as OpenVMS is capable of expressing times to an accuracy of 100ns. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Raymond Wang Department of Electrical Engineering Stanford University www.stanford.edu/~rayw

If you want to get processor time (like clock() in C), try GetCPUTime instead (only available in recent GPC versions). Hi, When I compile my pascal code with GNU Pascal's compiler, I get undeclared identifier `Clock' when I reference it in my code: e.g. y := clock/1000-y1 I thought Clock is a predefined global function. What should I do in order for the compiler to recognize the clock command? Thanks!
