Hi, all Frank suggested using the CPU timer, and I agree that it's a much better benchmark than the clock timer (I keep discovering gems in gpc.pas!). But I'm getting identical results from the two timers: var time1, time2 : longCard; dummy, cpu1, cpu2 : integer; ... time1 := GetMicroSecondTime; dummy := 0; cpu1 := GetCPUTime(dummy); for i := 1 to big do j := randNorm(0.0, 1.0); dummy := 0; cpu2 := GetCPUTime(dummy); time2 := GetMicroSecondTime; writeln('Time for ', big:1, ' randNorms: ', ((time2-time1)*0.000001):7:2, ' seconds, ', (cpu2-cpu1):5, ' cpu seconds.'); ... A note in gpc.pas says that the argument to GetCPUTime can be null and is then ignored. When the computer is idle except for this program, I get: Time for 100000000 randNorms: 171.03 seconds, 171 cpu seconds. When I'm checking email, opening files, etc., I get: Time for 100000000 randNorms: 202.29 seconds, 202 cpu seconds. What am I doing wrong here - or is GetCPUTime not working? Toby

Called up my ISP after my last message (something I think I should've done first); the tech support I got a hold of told me that whenever they detect a piece of mail as spam, they send me a notification. I'm not fully convinced of this, as the said tech support asked me what a spam filter is, but yeah... that's what I have to work with. I sure wish Mozilla SeaMonkey has provisions for verbose debug logs; or if it has, I found out and activated it sooner. But my Junk folder is empty. Why not try a program that does user input, say through a readln. When testing, you can delay the input as long as you wish. The net cpu time should be minimal, but the wall clock time obviously increases as you wait. Tom

Hallo Prof, I'm about to build the Cygwin version right now and as with the previous version I also distribute the MinGW components from mingw.org via the Cygwin mirrors (I don't build the MinGW parts myself). Unfortunately the MinGW GCC maintainer Danny Smith doesn't include GPC in his distribution yet. What about a new release of your MinGW pascal compiler? Gerrit -- =^..^=

Dos unit on Unix

Hi, I use FSplit, FindFirst, FindNext procedures from the Dos unit in program I'm trying to port for Linux. This procedures cut off the long filenames to 8 characters (DOS standard) and the program doesn't works under Linux correctly. What is possible solutions? What alternative to the Dos unit?
