Readln (F, stringVar) first does exactly the same as Read (F, stringVar), and then a Readln (stringVar). Perhaps something was broken temporarily while I changed other things in the Read/Write procedures. OTOH, the following program works correctly (i.e. outputs only 5 characters, even if I type more than 5) on my Linux GPC (which has been modified somewhat after 971001) as well as on my DJGPP GPC (which is the original 971001 binary distribution): program x; var s:string(5); begin readln(s); writeln(s) end. Perhaps you did some other thing in your program that triggered the first bug? When compiling pas files with gpc I get a message: cannot open -lgpc: No such file or directory Version of gpc and gcc is 2.7.2.1 Can somebody help? T.Kolenko

On 21 September, Frank Heckenbach posted a Unit `Rand' to this list which implements a `random' and a `randomize' function just this way. Error in Beta version (100197)

I get the following error when I try to compile this program in GPC beta (100197) for DJ Compiling: assign7Sort.pas gpi-hash.c(321) Error: failed assertion `ss.key == -DEBUG_HASH_KEY' Abort! This program compiled fine under the 2.0 verison of GPC, this program does use BPcompat. The source of this program is attached to this message (open it in Rhide if you want to "see" the line breaks) and I also attached the output of the bug-report-generator from Rhide. Good thing I backed up my GPC 2.0 before I installed the beta version :-) I hope you can find out what's wrong.
