Dear Bob,
I have installed GPC on MacOS, Linux, and Windows. If the Linux is unusual, you have to compile GPC from sources. I have compiled GPC on MacOS and Linux. Here is a summary of my experiences, with links to help you out:

Since I personally think the most ridiculous thing in the world is a compiler that won't work until it's compiled by another compiler
You have lived a sheltered life.
Oh, I am attempting to install and run this package on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.
I think you'll have to compile from sources, which means you need to install GCC. There's a link to the GCC installation files on my page. You will need some version of GCC installed on your computer in binary form. With that version, you can compile a newer version of GCC, until you get the GCC version that will compile the GPC sources for your platform.
Yours, Kevan
